For several years the Produce Exchange on Potters Cay Dock has been in a state of disrepair.
There was damage to the roof and other areas of the building caused by Hurricane Matthew back in 2016.
Since that time, the building has been infested with mold causing concerns for the health, safety and welfare of the employees and the general public and the safety of farm produce.
Towards this end, the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation have been directed to close The Produce Exchange on Potters Cay Dock temporarily to the general public effective immediately.
The operations of the Produce Exchange have now been relocated temporarily to a suitable location at BAIC Headquarters in the Soldier Road Industrial Park. The Produce Exchange will continue its operations from this new location effective Monday, February 10th.
In the meantime, plans are being made for the Produce Exchange to undergo massive renovations to restore the facility to an acceptable standard to accommodate staff members and the general public.
The Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation under the umbrella of the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources is responsible for Packing Houses on Cat Island, Eleuthera, Long Island and North Andros. The Produce Exchange serves as a central collection point and distribution center for farm produce shipped to New Providence by registered farmers in the family islands.
The Produce Exchange is a major component in the fresh farm produce industry in the country. Therefore, BAIC would like to take this opportunity to inform employees of the Produce Exchange that because of the concerns expressed for the health of employees, safety and welfare of the general public, the Produce Exchange is closed temporarily.
Effective Monday, February 10th, the operations to the Produce Exchange will continue at a suitable location at BAIC Headquarters in the Soldier Road Industrial Park.
Management at BAIC wishes to thank all staff at the Produce Exchange for their patience and cooperation in this temporary relocation as we look forward to serving our customers with the same whim, vigor and enthusiasm.
Management apologizes for any inconvenience this new arrangement may cause.
